UHS Students Win at Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Congratulations to our UHS students who earned awards at the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

Eight Trailblazers were recognized for their art and writing submissions in this year’s competition. According to the Scholastic website, theirs is “the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens.”

– Julia Poertner (’23); fashion “Eve’s Escape”, Silver Key award

– Julia Timmermans (’23); digital art “Open”, Silver Key

– Kylie Congdon (’23); comic art “Where I Started”, Honorable Mention 

– Alex Altenburg (’24); painting “ “Living” Room”, Honorable Mention

Drawing and illustration “El Escinco”, Gold Key award

Mixed media “Lucy’s Room”, Silver Key award

Our Gold Key art award recipients, Alfonzo and Alex, qualify to show their work at various venues this spring. The Central and Southern Indiana Region is sponsored by the Hoosier Writing Project at IUPUI. You can see Gold Key works at Marian University, Indianapolis campus, at their regional exhibition for the 2023 Gold Key Art Works and Art Portfolios, the Indianapolis Artsgarden, and the Marian University Theatre. Two Trailblazers also won awards in this competition for their writing submissions. Juniors Nettle Dill and Emma Laborsky each received awards for written pieces. Nettle earned a Silver Key for her poem, “a field of flowers sewn on” and Emma received a Gold Key for her short story, “The Prospect.” 

Awards ceremonies will be held on Sunday Mar. 5 at 1 pm and 3:30 pm at the Marian University Theatre, Marian Hall. The exhibition of works will be presented in both Marian Hall Theatre Gallery and the Evans Center Gallery for guests to explore the works designated as Gold Key winners. RSVP for the event here.
